Tying a Ballet Bun: A Step-by-Step Guide

Creating a secure ballet bun for all classes is essential for our female pupils. It keeps hair out of the face, allowing dancers to perform their best.  Don’t worry, though—the perfect ballet bun is simpler than it seems.

Here’s what you’ll need for your perfect ballet bun:

  • Hairbrush or comb
  • Hair elastics or bobbles
  • Hairspray, gel, or water
  • Hairpins (U-pins work best)
  • Bobby pins
  • Hair net

Now let’s dive into the steps:

  • Brush your hair: Start by brushing your hair to remove any tangles. Use a hairbrush or comb, whichever you prefer. If your hair needs a little extra manageability, lightly dampen it with water.
  • Create a ponytail and secure it: Gather your hair and pull it back into a ponytail. Use a hair elastic or bobble to secure it in place. Position the ponytail near the base of your head.
  • Twist the bun into a rope: Take the ponytail and tightly twist it, creating a rope-like structure. Remember, the tighter the twist, the more secure your bun will be.
  • Secure the bun with hairpins: Use U-shaped hairpins instead of bobby pins for better hold. Insert each pin by grabbing hair from the top of the bun and directing it down to the base. Keep adding pins around the bun to secure it and tuck in any loose strands.
  • Wrap the hair net around the bun: Choose a hair net that matches your hair color and wrap it around the bun. Secure it in place with a hairpin. This will keep any stray hairs in check and provide a polished look.
  • Tame loose hairs and set with hairspray: Use hairspray, gel, or bobby pins/clips to smooth down any loose hairs away from your face. Apply hairspray to keep everything in place and achieve a neat finish.

Tip: If you have bangs or fringe, you can incorporate them into your ballet bun or use gel/spray to slick them back. Secure any loose fringe with bobby pins or hair clips. Additionally, if you want to add some flair, feel free to decorate your ballet bun with a scrunchie. Just make sure it is securely fastened and not distracting during your dance routine.

There you have it—your beautifully tied ballet bun! Now you’re ready to shine and dance with confidence. Happy bun-tying!
